SV Outventure – Lagoon 440 Owners Version Sailing Catamaran

SV Outventure is a 2008 Lagoon 440 owners / maestro version that got a big overhaul in 2020 and 2021.
We bought her in Panama City from her Peruvian owner who had to leave her there due to the Covid 19 travel restrictions. We were sporadically looking for a boat for some time already and had already surveyed two other boats. After some research, the Lagoon 440 was the perfect boat for us.
She is:
  • Spacious but still with a focus on sailing (in contrast to newer Lagoon models), but with easy handling (in contrast to “performance” catamarans)
  • The interior is still “boat like” with solid wood instead of “IKEA style” plastic laminates and she has a great stainless steel kitchen counter
  • She has a Flybridge which is THE space where everybody wants to be 90 % of the time. Also you have a great view of where you’re going. In case of bad weather we can control her easily from the inside.
  • She is an “owners version” model. That means that she has three cabins in total. In the starboard hull there’s one huge cabin (owner’s suite) with a lot of storage and a large, comfortable bathroom with separate shower. There’s two more cabins for guests with two ensuite bathrooms.
The old owner took of good care of her and had permanent crew on board, but he really wanted to let her go due to the Covid related circumstances. We came to see her three times with two independent surveyors and found a couple of things that would need to be repaired and upgraded. That gave us some room for negotiations and also the opportunity to install the things that we wanted, like a new watermaker, dinghy or navigation electronics.
There were a couple of things to upgrade that were very important to us as we use our Lagoon 440 SV Outventure to explore  remote places without access to marinas.
  • Electrical System: We installed a huge Solar System and combined that with 800 Ah of Lithium Batteries, highest quality chargers and a 3000 W inverter charger to never run out of juice. We can cook with our induction stove and boil water in a kettle, run two large fridges and a separate large freezer and charge ours and guest’s iPhones, pads, drones and whatever.  If we ever run into multiple days of bad weather, we have a 9.5kW generator as a backup.
  • Anchoring: We heard horror stories from boats dragging in stormy squalls that occur often here in Panama. So we oversized everything that has got to do with anchoring. An 85 lbs Mantus Anchor with a 12mm chain keeps us in place and we have a 65 lbs Rocna anchor as a backup or stern anchor.
  • Bumble, our Dinghy is a Highfield 340 CL. She is the largest and most stable Dinghy that the both of us can carry on to the beach. A double bottom Aluminium floor keeps the feet and things in the Dinghy dry and she has a front locker for the gasoline tank so there’s nothing bouncing around. We got her a brand-new Yamaha 15hp two stroke engine with a lot of grunt to get her to plane so we can go to nearby surf-, spearfishing and free dive spots quickly.
  • Electronics: All navigational electronics are new and from Raymarine and work well. All the time. We can access everything with our iPads and iPhones which is super-convenient.
  • Galley (the boat’s kitchen): We love cooking and have a nice Magma gas bbq outside, an induction stove and additional gas stove and oven and enough fridge and freezer space to store fresh goods and freshly caught fish (which we get a lot of here on the Pacific side).
  • Watermaker: We installed a high output 110V Seawater Pro Watermaker that makes 40 gallons (160 litres) per hour. That’s just awesome as we never run out of water (yes, you can drink this water!)
